BACKGROUND

In March 2013, whilst running our 1st ZOOZ Marathon, I learned that my best friend’s daughter had died, following a freak accident whilst she was on her honeymoon in Barcelona.  I was devastated & vowed there & then to call our annual marathon after this beautiful young girl, “Hadar Shalgi Shalom” to honour & to always remember her.

Little did anyone know that Sam & I, by a cruel twist of fate, would also lose our darling son Paul, (Belinda’s brother) in December that same year, by an accidental drowning, whilst he was in NZ……

Both Paul & Hadar were very special people, loved by all who ever met them, & both were exceptionally talented - Hadar as a dancer, & Paul as a tennis player, coach & inspirational mentor.

Two terribly tragic deaths of beautiful young people. Both are so sadly missed by their families & friends, & always will be……..

Last year, our 2nd Marathon, was therefore named in honour of both  Paul & Hadar.  Our 3rd Annual Marathon will once again be named in honour of the Loving & Blessed Memories of Paul Harlan Arber, & Hadar Shalgi Shalom. Z”lI am more than a little aware that Pesach (Passover) commences the following evening & that many of us who are holding Seders in our homes, will be frantically cooking & preparing.  But could I please ask you to try to organise your time & prepare a little more in advance,  so that you can spare a few hours to join us in dancing? Unfortunately there is no other opportunity for me to run this marathon later in the year. DONATIONSLast year, quite a few of our dancers & friends, kindly & generously donated money to assist Sam & I in setting up a special memorial tennis scholarship in Paul’s name.  After obtaining the best legal advice, we discovered that it was not going to be quite so straightforward to set up a tax deductible donation towards a tennis fund.I am pleased to announce that this year Sam & I are setting up a special annual award to honour Paul’s memory. We will be presenting annual cash prizes of $1,500 each to the best & fairest young tennis players, male & female, at the end of the Victorian Premier League season this year. This will be the 1st year of the awards. The winners will be chosen by a panel of selectors from Tennis Victoria & the Tennis Umpires Association. These special scholarships will be granted to the players not only for their tennis capabilities, but they must also exhibit the same qualities that Paul exhibited -  strength of character, determination & good sportsmanship. We plan to make this an annual award for as long as we live. All the money that was donated at last year’s marathon, will be going towards this year’s awards. We deeply appreciate your help.
If you would like to make a small donation this year as well to assist us in this ongoing endeavour, we would be extremely grateful for your assistance.

(In Ra’anana, Israel, a special dancers’ scholarship has been set up in Hadar’s blessed memory).

FORMAT FOR THE EVENING

The evening will commence at 7.30 pm with some beginners to low-intermediate circle & line dances. At 8.30 pm we will have our 1st short bracket of partner dances & then continue with circle dances & line dances for all levels, interspersed with brackets of partner dancing.  Unfortunately we have to finish the evening early - at 1.30 am :)  (the bowling club would not extend our hire to any later than that!) But at least we will still have 6 hours of dancing pleasure.  The marathon will be a great warm up for Rikud Oz camp!! It will give you an opportunity to dance some dances that are not mainstream.

We intend to have lots of FUN, as all our ZOOZ events are!

REQUESTS
Dancers from ALL the Melbourne groups are VERY, VERY, WELCOME!ZOOZ Dancers, please feel free to invite your friends who dance with other groups. Spread the word. We would really love them to join us. The more the merrier!  Since Friday is a public holiday - we can all sleep in a little!!

I will try my best to honour requests so long as I am told in advance, then I can ensure that I have the music!
